FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of having gutters on my home?

The purpose of having gutters on a home is to direct rainwater away from the roof and foundation, preventing water damage. They channel water from the roof to downspouts, which then direct it safely away from the home’s exterior and foundation. This helps avoid issues like erosion, basement flooding, mold growth, and damage to landscaping. Gutters also protect the structure of the house by reducing the risk of water seeping into the walls or foundation, which could lead to costly repairs.

What are seamless gutters?

Seamless gutters are continuous gutters made from a single piece of aluminum that runs the entire length of the roofline without joints or seams. Unlike traditional gutters, which are assembled from multiple sections, seamless gutters are custom-made to fit the specific dimensions of your home. This design reduces the chances of leaks, as there are fewer places where water can escape. The lack of seams also means less maintenance, since there are fewer areas where debris can collect or block the flow of water. Seamless gutters more durable and aesthetically appealing than sectional gutters.

What are the different styles of gutters you offer?

5K: This is a “K-style” gutter that is 5 inches wide. The “K” shape is characterized by a flat back and decorative front that resembles the letter “K” when viewed from the side. This profile is popular because it combines both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

6K: This is a “K-style” gutter that is 6 inches wide. 6K gutters are larger than the 5K style gutters, making them more effective at handling heavier rainfall or larger roof surfaces. The increased size helps prevent clogging and overflow, ensuring better water management. They are the best option for the rainfall we experience here in the Pacific Northwest!

Fascia: This style of gutter is installed directly onto the fascia board, which is the horizontal board that runs along the edge of the roof of a home, without the need for additional brackets or hangers, creating a sleek, integrated look. They have a slightly smaller capacity than the “K-style” gutters due to their more simple shape. This style is more streamlined and often used for a more minimalist and modern feel.

How often should I get my gutters cleaned?

In the Pacific Northwest, where rainfall is frequent and often heavy, it’s recommended to have your gutters cleaned twice a year: once in the Spring and once in the Fall. This schedule helps prevent clogs and ensures the gutters can efficiently handle the rainwater during the wet seasons. However, if your home is surrounded by a lot of trees you may need to have your gutters cleaned more frequently, perhaps 3-4 times a year. Regular maintenance is crucial here in Oregon to prevent water damage, moss growth, or overflowing gutters, which could cause issues like foundation erosion or basement leaks. Additionally, if you notice gutters overflowing or water pooling around your foundation, it may indicate that a cleaning is needed immediately.

Spring: Winter storms, combined with fallen leaves and organic debris, may cause gutters to become clogged again as temperatures rise, and rain continues.

Fall: Leaves and debris from trees are especially abundant during the fall, which can clog gutters and downspouts, preventing proper water flow.

When are gutter covers/guards recommended?

Gutter covers/guards are recommended in several situations where they can improve the performance and longevity of your gutters. They help keep debris out of your gutters, reducing the frequency of cleaning and the risk of clogs.

Here are some common scenarios where gutter covers are especially beneficial:

  1. Heavy Tree Canopy Nearby
    • When: If your home is surrounded by a large number of trees, especially deciduous tress that drop leaves, needles, or seeds, gutter covers can prevent debris from clogging your gutters.
    • Why: Gutter covers reduce the accumulation of leaves, twigs, and pine needles, which can clog gutters, leading to overflowing, water damage, or even gutter detachment.
  2. High Maintenance Areas
    • When: If you’re tired of frequent gutter cleanings, especially in the Pacific Northwest where we get lots of rainfall and windy conditions, gutter covers can save you time and money in the long run.
    • Why: Gutter covers reduce the need for frequent cleanings by keeping out debris that would otherwise accumulate in your gutters.
  3. Homes with Moss or Algae Growth
    • When: In areas with high humidity or heavy rainfall, moss and algae can grow in gutters and cause blockages.
    • Why: Gutter covers help prevent moisture from sitting in the gutter, reducing the conditions that promote moss or algae growth.
  4. Prevention of Ice Dams
    • When: In colder or fluctuating temperatures, where snowmelt can refreeze in gutters and form ice dams.
    • Why: Gutter covers can help prevent ice build-up by keeping debris out, ensuring the gutters can efficiently handle melting snow and preventing blockages that cause ice dam formation.
  5. Protecting Gutters from Larger Debris
    • When: If you have trees that drop larger debris, such as acorns, seeds, or even small branches.
    • Why: Gutter covers keep this type of debris from accumulating, reducing the chances of clogs and helping to maintain water flow.
  6. Long-Term Protection
    • When: If you’re looking for a long-term solution to prevent damage from clogged gutters, such as to the foundation, roofing, or siding.
    • Why: By preventing clogs, gutter covers protect your home from water damage, erosion, and the wear and tear caused by overflowing gutters.
When might gutter covers/guards not be needed?

No Trees or Low Debris: If your home is in an area with few trees or minimal debris, regular gutter cleaning might suffice without the added cost of gutter covers.

Budget Constraints: While gutter covers can save time and maintenance costs in the long run, the upfront cost might not be justified for times that don’t face significant debris issues.
